Such nostalgia。 Brings me back to my childhood。 :)

I remember loving this book as a child and considered it a classic in the back of my mind。 But now, reading it to my child, I take issue with the objective of the story。 Why are we teaching kids that in order to make friends they must succumb to others' demands to change themselves to fit in? Sharing is admirable。 Making friends is important。 But if your "friends" demand that you give them your prized possessions in order to hang out with them, you need to find some better friends。 Shine, rainbo I remember loving this book as a child and considered it a classic in the back of my mind。 But now, reading it to my child, I take issue with the objective of the story。 Why are we teaching kids that in order to make friends they must succumb to others' demands to change themselves to fit in? It's sparkly and kids love it, but the story's message isn't cute at all。 The message is: People will only love you/be friends/accept you if you give things (in this case, parts of his own body) to them。 Basically other fish are jealous that the fish is beautiful and they only accept him when he gets rid of what makes him special。 Fish school: Give me your scales bro!Rainbow fish: Ok, you can each have a scale, now I have nothing leftFish school: We are all your friends now that you gave pieces It's sparkly and kids love it, but the story's message isn't cute at all。 The message is: People will only love you/be friends/accept you if you give things (in this case, parts of his own body) to them。 Basically other fish are jealous that the fish is beautiful and they only accept him when he gets rid of what makes him special。 Fish school: Give me your scales bro!Rainbow fish: Ok, you can each have a scale, now I have nothing leftFish school: We are all your friends now that you gave pieces of yourself to usThat's creepy and disturbing, this book needs a rewrite。 Scales aren't like sharing cookies, they're literally part of a fish。 The creepiest interpretation is that you must literally remove your scales/hair/skin and give it to strangers so that they're nice and don't shun you。 Someone should write a parody of this。I am definitely 'a liberal' and I do not approve of this message。 I would share with others if I had 1 billion dollars, but I will not be sharing my skin with anyone because they're jealous。 Fish scales aren't money。 And no one should have to share their gift with everyone on earth, not all people are kind or deserve your attention。 I wouldn't want a child to think that she has to share everything with everyone, some people will take advantage of that。 In order to actually teach a child about sharing I would show her how I donate to food banks。 。。。more

*SPOLERS*The Rainbow Fish is a children’s book about a very beautiful and shiny fish, Rainbow Fish, who at first refuses to give up his unique scales。 Though, after meeting with a wise octopus, Rainbow Fish learns the joy of sharing and makes a bunch of friends。 I liked this book because it was a quick read and was well illustrated。 I do wish that the book had a tad more content because, as an adult reader, it was easy to predict where the book was headed within the first few pages。 This book sp *SPOLERS*The Rainbow Fish is a children’s book about a very beautiful and shiny fish, Rainbow Fish, who at first refuses to give up his unique scales。 Though, after meeting with a wise octopus, Rainbow Fish learns the joy of sharing and makes a bunch of friends。 I liked this book because it was a quick read and was well illustrated。 I do wish that the book had a tad more content because, as an adult reader, it was easy to predict where the book was headed within the first few pages。 This book specifically talks about the issue of sharing, especially to those who are needy。 Rainbow Fish at first has all the colorful scales, which could be attributed to any material possession such as money, food, etc。 But after meeting with the octopus he learns to share and spread his wealth with fish that were not born into a position as lucky as his。 I would recommend this story to parents of young children who are looking for a quick read that contains a brief message on life。 。。。more

Good artwork, horrible story about being forced to give away parts of your body in order to make friends。 There are better ways to teach children about sharing。 Sadly, children like this story。

LOL many of the 1 star reviewers for this book are just crazy, digging far too deep into a。。。 children's book about sharing。 Bringing politics into this is just sad, and you should really reflect if the first thing you take away from kids' picture books is your own political agenda。 Your 3 year old kids can't even conceptualize that stuff; they just think the rainbow fish is pretty。Please get over yourself。。。 It's a cute book lol。 And the rainbow fish was extremely vain and mean in the beginning LOL many of the 1 star reviewers for this book are just crazy, digging far too deep into a。。。 children's book about sharing。 Bringing politics into this is just sad, and you should really reflect if the first thing you take away from kids' picture books is your own political agenda。 Your 3 year old kids can't even conceptualize that stuff; they just think the rainbow fish is pretty。Please get over yourself。。。 It's a cute book lol。 And the rainbow fish was extremely vain and mean in the beginning anyway; sharing and wanting to make others feel good shouldn't be looked down upon。 Good grief。 。。。more

I was not a fan of The Rainbow Fish。 The story is supposed to be a story of sharing。 The story is about a fish who must give away his beautiful scales to make friends。 Children should not be taught they must give away parts of themselves for people to like them。

karen vega puga

This is a great book to talk about being nice。 If you are not nice to others no onw will want to be your friend。 No one will want to be around and lonely。

Elliot's Mama

The classic story of the beautiful fish who learns to share。 Elliot enjoyed it。 Looking forward to reading it again when we do a fish theme in the fall。*library book。 Read at 21 months

I don't feel like you should have to change yourself to make others happy, and so, I don't like the message of the book。 I also don't entirely believe in sharing, so I wasn't a fan。 I don't feel like you should have to change yourself to make others happy, and so, I don't like the message of the book。 I also don't entirely believe in sharing, so I wasn't a fan。 。。。more

This book I have come back to again and again for many topics to teach preschool: social/emotional and relationship building, interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships, and ocean study。 There is a lot to learn with Rainbow Fish and their experience learning being excluded from having a lot of pride on physical appearances。

This is a book about Friendship and sharing。 I think it also teaches the importance of connecting with others。 People are more important than possessions and that what's on the inside is more important that what's on the outside。 I have read many harsh reviews of this book but I felt that the lessons were good。 I read this book to my child。 recommend。 This is a book about Friendship and sharing。 I think it also teaches the importance of connecting with others。 People are more important than possessions and that what's on the inside is more important that what's on the outside。 I have read many harsh reviews of this book but I felt that the lessons were good。 I read this book to my child。 recommend。 。。。more

This book has an awful message and is one of the only books I have ever bought with high reviews that I had to stop reading to my children, while reading aloud。 I don’t know who would ever be ok with a book that says that a person had to share parts of their body for others to like them。 We should never teach our kids this! There may have been a better meaning behind this, but it was not executed well。 Really beautiful pictures, such a disappointment。

I re-read this just to see if it still stood up。 It doesn't。。。it's the same issue with The Giving Tree。 Teaching kids to give up more than they can handle losing。 There's a fine line to walk between being helpful and being altruistic。 (Though it's really weird to see people interpreting this as socialist propaganda haha, I don't really think that is what it is。) I re-read this just to see if it still stood up。 It doesn't。。。it's the same issue with The Giving Tree。 Teaching kids to give up more than they can handle losing。 There's a fine line to walk between being helpful and being altruistic。 (Though it's really weird to see people interpreting this as socialist propaganda haha, I don't really think that is what it is。) 。。。more
